Aliyu Barau, PhD hails from Kano city, Northern Nigeria’s largest urban centre. He teaches and supervises coupled human and natural system studies at both under and postgraduate levels at the Department of Geography and also Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences of Bayero University Kano, Nigeria. Aliyu obtained his PhD in Urban and Regional Planning of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and specialises on human dimensions of rapid urban and peri-urban landscape change. Prior to that he got his BSc and MSc in Geography and Land Resources from Bayero University. Aliyu is a Fellow (Sustainable Urbanisation) International Social Science Council, and a Research Fellow for the Future Earth research initiatives: Earth System Governance Project; Urbanization and Global Environmental Change. He also serves a member of Experts for the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). My research interests are interdisciplinary and hence are not limited to human dimensions of urban and global environmental change, landscape urbanism, sustainable land use, Anthropocene, and innovation for urban security and sustainability. Aliyu has published his works high journals such as Landscape and Urban Planning, Land Use Policy, Habitat International, Ecosystem Services, Journal of Cleaner Production, Urban Ecosystems. He has also co-authored papers with scholars from all continents.
Research Interests/Expertise: Socio-ecological impacts of special economic zones; anthropocene landscapes; history of urban environmental change; decision science; environmental governance; literary and faith based environmentalism; and coupled human and natural systems in environmental change research.
